History

Yuna was born to a (former) High Priest of Yevon called Braska and an Al Bhed woman (the sister of Cid – Leader of the Al Bhed) in the city of Bevelle, the center of the Yevon religion. Because of the prejudice against the Al Bhed, Braska was informally excommunicated from the Temple of Yevon and Yuna’s very existence was frowned on; the entire family endured hatred and reproach. When Yuna was four her mother, who had been at odds with her own family for her choice to marry a Yevonite, returned to Bikanel in an attempt to make things right. She never made it. A great monster called Sin who had tormented Spira for a thousand years attacked the ship Yuna’s mother was on, and killed her. It was at this point that Braska vowed to become a summoner and defeat Sin.
Yuna was seven years old when her father began his pilgrimage across Spira in his quest to bring the Calm. While Braska was away, Yuna was left as a ward of the Temple of Yevon in Bevelle where she waited for the Calm to come and for Sir Auron, her father’s guardian, to return for her. Sir Auron was unable to come to collect Yuna and so he entrusted a small Ronso called Kimahri to take Braska’s daughter from Bevelle and to Besaid in his stead. In Besaid, Yuna met Lulu and Wakka (both of whom would later become her guardians) and planned to begin training to become a summoner like her father, despite her friends’ objections. When Yuna was seventeen years old, the Calm ended and Yuna completed her training and began her own pilgrimage. Along the way, Yuna met Tidus, a boy who claimed to be from Zanarkand and he joined her summoner’s party as a guardian along with Sir Auron (who had appeared as if from nowhere with a promise to fulfill to Braska) and her maternal cousin Rikku.
Yuna and her party did, in fact, bring the Calm back to Spira. By refusing the Final Summoning in Zanarkand, the group was forced to find another, more permanent means of defeating Sin. The Fayth of Bevelle (Bahamut) was the one to show the group the way. This “Eternal Calm”, though, would came at the cost of Tidus’ life, which Tidus gave, selflessly. Heartbroken, Yuna (who had made no plans past Zanarkand since she initially intended to die) began a new life, better for having met Tidus in the fact that she is more free-spirited and cherishes life, living it day to day.
Two years after her pilgrimage, Yuna ets out as a sphere hunter (a new craze sweeping Spira), becoming a member of the Gullwings to learn more about the sphere that features a young man with a strong resemblance to Tidus confined within a prison cell. The Gullwings' members include Rikku, a mysterious young woman named "Paine", Al Bhed child prodigy named "Shinra", Rikku's brother Brother, and his friend Buddy. Together with Rikku and Paine, the trio of girls are known as "YRP".

Personality

Yuna, as a whole, is a fairly easy woman to understand. It doesn’t take much to realize that she would sacrifice her life in an instant for someone she cared for – for complete strangers who simply asked her to. If Yuna feels the cause is worthy, she will devote herself completely and totally to completing her task. She’s something of a “sacrificial lamb”, and good. Rikku and Paine have called her a “pushover” because of her inability to refuse anyone who needs help, but she doesn’t seem to mind.
Yuna is kind and compassionate, and believes in the idea of “live and let live”, reluctant to cause harm if she can help it. Despite her reluctance, she is incredibly brave and strong-willed once she has made up her mind, and she has proven that she will do what needs to be done. Yuna is intelligent and mature for her age, careful and precise and despite her serious nature (though she has gotten better about that!), she does enjoy laughter and smiling. In addition to all of this, the former high summoner has a tendency to hide her more negative feelings because it is expected of her. She’s become more open to the idea of showing hurt or anger, but tends to settle for a more serene mood despite whatever emotional highs or lows she may be experiencing.
